In a digital world where users can leave a website within seconds, strong design plays an important role in capturing and holding attention. A memorable website is not only visually appealing, but also communicates its purpose clearly and creates an engaging experience for the user. Elements such as layout, color contrast, typography, and multimedia all influence how a visitor interacts with a site and how lasting that impression becomes.
To better understand what makes a website effective and visually compelling, I explored three websites featured on Awwwards.com. Each example uses different design choices, including symmetry, striking color palettes, and immersive video. By analyzing these sites, I can identify techniques that make them successful and consider how similar ideas could strengthen my own web design work.
I found three websites on awwwards.com that I could look at and get ideas from.
- I like John Chamberlain’s use of symmetry and contrasting colors, which are ideal for readability and visual impact and represent strength and sophistication. I can use this website as inspiration to enhance the designs I’ve made so far by including symmetry and two contrasting colors that are readable and impactful.
- Emilie Aubry This was my favorite website out of the three I listed. I liked the focus on the videos and cinematography and how the color grading between videos had vivid colors and a dark color scheme, which made it look “cool” and modern. I liked how simple and clear the layout for each page was with its use of a small font and a design that lets the user know how long the video will last. In my designs, I want to explore adding compelling videos that take up the body of the page and having toggles that allow the user to switch between videos.
- Explore Own Primland I like how they used a video with striking imagery and vibrancy as a background figure for the front page. I liked how easy it was to see the font’s centering and the headings’ sizes. As a user, my impression of this website was quiet luxury, prestige, and mystique. I would enhance my designs by having a single video as a background and white lettering with serifs as headings and subtitles.
Looking at these examples helps me recognize what makes a website stand out and inspires new ideas I can bring into my design process.
